September Illustration Walkthrough
Hey everyone!
It’s been a long while since my last blog update. I’ve been on a personal recovery break and am feeling a bit better so I’m going to try to get back in the swing of things here.
Originally, I was going to write several blog pieces on my learning experiences with writing, art, comics and games... And maybe I'll eventually get to posting about them. But for now, I want to do something different with my website blogs, (and feeling orphaned out of the dying social media platforms) so I figured why not just transfer all of that over here on my own “platform!”
This summer's only full color illustration that I did.
I hadn’t touched my digital art tools all summer , and I only did a couple of late night sketchbook sketches (which I sometimes feature in my Instagram stories), so to have felt mentally and physically recovered enough (I got sick too besides falling into depression) to finish this illustration is quite an accomplishment. Since I hadn't done anything all summer except to rest and recover, I really wanted to draw something summery and something to bring my mood up before the actual summer ends. Thus, I drew my snotty son and his sister.
I have such a soft spot for my DAIMO kids o(TヘTo)
SKETCH
I spent a good several hours with references sketching out multiple layers the composition and clothes. I wanted to focus on quality. You can see I drew Jensen’s head too big early on.
LINEART
This is my favorite part of the process! I use a custom-made brush for all the lines (except the eyebrows—I use a different brush for that). Most times, I kinda just wish I can just leave the art done as lines haha.
BACKGROUND
Here, I “paint“ in the background using gradients and my sketch brush (enlarged) which is really just a pencil brush because I like textures. I use ready-made brushes I bought for rendering the clouds, waves, and sand.
FLAT COLORS
I flat in the characters. Then I render the rest with shading and highlights via clip-layering on top of the color layer. Lastly, I add in the speech bubble and my artist name.
That’s the basics of how I painted this month’s illustration. I hope this was helpful and enjoyable for you guys. Let me know what you think in the comments below!
